Artur Bordalo

Street art on train tracks throughout Portugal

Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo (also known as Bordalo II) has created a series of street art over various train tracks throughout Portugal. The art has caught the eye of many, as it offers a bright contrast to the earthy tones of the railways. Visit Bordalo’swebsite or Facebook page to see more of his work.

mediamattersforamerica:

"Let men be men": Fox hosts eagerly agreed with the NY Post article that claimed “catcalls are flattering.”

A few more gems from this segment

  • "They mean it in a nice way."
  • "It’s nice to get compliments."
  • "As long as you don’t come within arms length, it’s fine."

But for many women, catcalls are humiliating and degrading. Some blame themselves, wondering what they could have done differently to prevent it. And the consequences can considerably affect a person’s social behavior and habits, as women report they avoid eye contact and walking alone in public, or change their outfits or routes to avoid harassment.”

In reality, this is no small problem. According to Stop Street Harassment, “at least 65% of women have experienced catcalls, leers, and unwanted sexual propositions,” disproportionately affecting those with low incomes, women of color, and the LGBTQ community. And while there are federal laws protecting women from workplace harassment, street harassment is addressed on a state-by-state basis.

Let’s bring some voices of reason into this discussion:

Natalie DiBlasio, USA TODAY:

Catcalling does not mean you are beautiful, smart, strong or interesting. Catcalling means a stranger values you so little he doesn’t care if he makes you feel uncomfortable or threatened.

Margaret Eby, Brooklyn Magazine:

Catcalling is about control, not about your cute shorts. It’s an assertion that women are just visitors in a male space, there to be assessed by appearance and summarily dismissed or flirted with.

Ashley Ross, TIME:

To legitimize catcalling is to give voice to those who don’t deserve it: the man who told me he wanted to perform oral sex on me, the man who said he wanted it the other way around and the man who said he could have me if he wanted me.

The dehumanizing culture of catcalling must stop, but conservative media outlets like Fox aren’t helping. It’s up to us all to educate ourselves about the harms of harassment, so that women can truly be free in the streets of America.

These Doctor Who-themed engagement photos are too cute for words.

TJ Mundell and Timmy Patterson of Dallas constructed a custom TARDIS and hired photographers Shaun and Shannon Menary to shoot in an appropriately gloomy warehouse in Deep Ellum. To complete the scene, Patterson dolled up as the Ninth Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston) and Mundell went as the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant).

Fittingly, Patterson’s proposal was something right out of a Doctor Who episode: “He proposed while we were hiking on a mountain in Japan last November,” recalled Mundell. “We were surrounded by monkeys and were almost killed by a giant Japanese wasp.”

Patterson and Mundell will tie the knot on November 8 in Saratoga, California. [x]

Help send Maya to LeakyCon in Florida to see friends & inspirations at the convention that taught her there are things in the world worth falling in love with.
I don’t have an incredibly uplifting message about a long-term artistic goal now within reach or a sob story about a great loss. All I’ve got is Harry Potter, and a lonely little girl who found friendship and safety in a book about a boy wizard.
But anyone who has read Harry Potter will know that this isn’t just a series about a kid and some dragons and some flying brooms. Harry Potter is remarkable because it tells a story of love triumphing over darkness, of the power of friendship and loyalty, but it is truly magical because it also inspires and unites people to do the same. The message of Harry Potter is this- we have the power to make our world better. And the weapon we have to defeat the darkness we face is love. Love for each other, and for our world, and for our stories. Love for ourselves, and for music and chocolate and Doctor Who. We’re not here to save our world. We’re here to fall in love with it. We’re here to see how miraculous human consciousness is, and then use that consciousness to create beautiful and horrible and wonderful things. Harry Potter didn’t save my life- it made me want to save my own.
LeakyCon is a tangible representation of this sense of community, strength, and love that Harry Potter has provided for people around the world. For just under a week, Harry Potter fans from all over the world get together, go to concerts, attend panels about media and fan-based communities, and connect with each other in a way that we only ever have online for the rest of the year. Going to LeakyCon gives me a chance to see, thank, and hug the friends who have made my life what it is, but most importantly, it gives me a chance to feel at home- safe and comfortable and loved in a community that was there for me at some of the darkest times in my life.
Support the Indiegogo campaign: Harry, I’m Coming Home

Just a reminder that this exists! You can get all kinds of cool things, like a handmade, personalized cross-stitch, a copy of my NaNoWriMo novel, or writing and such from me!

Hey, guys! This ends in a week, so i’ll be reblogging it a couple more times before then!! If you can spare a few dollars, that would be so lovely and good of you, and if you can’t, I’d adore you if you could reblog this post!!
